Asset finance for Forklifts
Forklift finance for growing warehouse and logistics operations
Learn how forklift finance may help spread equipment cost while preserving working capital and matching payments to business use.
Forklifts are essential in many warehouses, yards, ports and manufacturing sites, but replacing or adding equipment can put pressure on cash flow. For a business that needs to move pallets, load trailers or handle stock safely and efficiently, asset finance can be a practical way to spread the cost of the vehicle over time rather than paying the full amount upfront. OCE is a commercial finance broker, not a direct lender, so we help businesses explore funding routes rather than providing the finance ourselves. Common structures include hire purchase and leasing. The right option usually depends on how long the forklift will be used, whether the business wants eventual ownership, and how the asset will support day to day operations. Lenders will assess the business, the forklift itself, its age and condition, and likely resale value before deciding whether to offer funding.
Common funding challenges
Balancing cash flow with urgent operational need
Forklifts are often bought because a contract has been won, storage space has expanded, or an older machine has become unreliable. Even when the purchase is clearly justified, paying the full amount upfront can reduce working capital needed for payroll, stock purchases, insurance or repairs. Finance can help a business keep cash available while still getting the equipment in place, but the lender will still want to see that the business can afford the repayments alongside its normal trading cycle.
Choosing between ownership and flexibility
Different finance structures place different responsibilities on the business. With hire purchase, the agreement is typically aimed at eventual ownership once the balance is settled. Leasing is usually more about use than ownership, and the business may prefer this if it wants to upgrade equipment more frequently or avoid committing to a long term asset. The decision often depends on whether the forklift is likely to remain in service for many years, or whether fleet turnover matters more than ownership.
Understanding how lenders judge the asset
Forklifts are not all viewed in the same way. A lender will consider whether the machine is new or used, its condition, service history, specification and resale value. They may also look at where it will operate, because a forklift used on clean warehouse floors may be treated differently from one working outdoors on uneven ground. Age and condition matter because they influence how well the asset may hold value if it ever needs to be recovered or sold.
How asset finance may help
Preserve working capital for trading needs
Using finance can help a business avoid tying up cash in one equipment purchase. That can be especially useful for operators with seasonal peaks, fluctuating stock levels or delayed customer payments. Instead of weakening the day to day cash position, the cost of the forklift can be spread in a way that better fits the business cycle.
Match the funding to operational use
Forklift finance can be aligned to the reason the asset is being acquired. A business taking on a new warehouse contract may need immediate access to equipment, while a manufacturer replacing ageing vehicles may want a structured payment plan that sits alongside maintenance and production planning. The agreement can be selected to suit the intended use and the business's preference for ownership or replacement planning.
Support safer and more reliable operations
A suitable forklift can reduce handling delays, lower the strain on staff and improve movement through the site. In practice, that can mean better dispatch performance, fewer manual handling issues and less downtime caused by unreliable older machines. Finance may make it easier to replace an underperforming asset before it begins to disrupt service levels or create avoidable safety concerns.

Frequently asked questions
Is forklift finance only available for new equipment?
Not necessarily. Some lenders may consider used forklifts as well as new ones, but they will look carefully at age, condition, service history and resale value. A suitable machine for one lender may not be acceptable to another, so the asset itself is part of the credit decision.
What is the difference between hire purchase and leasing for a forklift?
Hire purchase is generally used when a business wants the option to own the forklift after the agreement is completed. Leasing is usually more focused on using the equipment rather than owning it. The business should also check who is responsible for maintenance, insurance and VAT under the specific agreement.
Will the forklift always be accepted as security?
No. Lenders assess each case individually and can decline a proposal if the forklift is unsuitable or if the business profile does not support the application. They may also ask for additional information on trading performance, the intended working environment and how the asset will be used.
What information is usually needed for an application?
Lenders commonly ask for business accounts or management figures, bank information, details of the forklift, the supplier quote and an explanation of how the equipment will support operations. If the business is replacing an existing machine, service records and information about the old asset may also be relevant.
Eligibility
Eligibility depends on the lender's assessment of the business, the forklift and the proposed agreement. OCE does not guarantee approval, and different lenders may take different views on ownership structure, age, condition, VAT treatment and repayment profile. Compare the total payable, charges, any deposit or final payment, VAT timing and early-termination obligations before committing. Spreading payments does not necessarily reduce total cost. Maintenance, insurance and upgrades are not automatically included in a lease. Failure to meet the agreement can lead to recovery of the equipment and further liabilities under its terms.
