Unsecured business loans: term borrowing without a charge over specific assets

An unsecured business loan provides a fixed sum repaid over an agreed term without the lender taking a charge over property or equipment, though personal guarantees are often requested. Ocean Capital Exchange introduces businesses to third-party lenders.

Definition

What an unsecured business loan is

An unsecured business loan is a term loan assessed mainly on the business's trading performance and credit profile, where the lender does not take a legal charge over specific business assets.

Unsecured does not mean risk-free for the owners. Lenders commonly ask directors for personal guarantees, which can make them personally liable if the business does not repay.

Because the lender has less recourse, amounts and terms are often more modest than secured lending.

Suitability

Which businesses it tends to suit

Unsecured loans suit trading businesses with a clear purpose and cash flow to support repayments.

Usually a fit

  • Established trading businesses with steady revenue.
  • Businesses without property or assets to offer, or unwilling to charge them.
  • Defined projects such as hiring, marketing campaigns, fit-outs or stock.
  • Directors comfortable with the implications of a personal guarantee, where requested.

Usually not a fit

  • Very early-stage businesses without trading history, which lenders may decline.
  • Large, long-term investments better suited to secured lending.
  • Ongoing, fluctuating working-capital needs that a term loan does not flex to meet.
  • Directors unwilling to give guarantees, where a lender requires them.

Process

How an unsecured loan works

The process is generally simpler than secured lending.

  1. 01

    Define the need

    Purpose, amount and preferred term.

  2. 02

    Lender assessment

The lender reviews accounts, bank statements and credit history.

  3. 03

    Offer

If it decides to lend, the lender sets out the amount, term, pricing and any guarantees.

  4. 04

    Guarantees signed

Directors sign guarantees where required, ideally after independent advice.

  5. 05

    Drawdown

Funds are paid to the business.

  6. 06

    Repayment

Fixed instalments are collected over the term.

Why Ocean

A loan matched to your repayment capacity

Ocean looks at the purpose of borrowing and how the business expects to repay it before discussing providers. Access to a wide panel means the conversation can go beyond the term loan your existing bank happens to offer.

  1. Industry context, not just an application form

We discuss how your business trades, when money comes in and what the funding must achieve, so sector-specific cash-flow pressures form part of the conversation.

  2. Access to a wide panel

Ocean works with a wide panel of third-party lenders and specialist finance providers. That gives you options beyond one bank's product range, subject to provider appetite and eligibility.

  3. The product should fit the business

We help establish whether a loan, invoice facility, asset funding or another structure fits the requirement, rather than starting with whichever product a single bank has available.

  4. Compare the terms that matter

Look beyond a headline rate. We help you understand the fees, repayment pattern, security, guarantees and exit conditions relevant to the options being discussed.

  5. Less repeated legwork

A central point of contact helps organise the initial enquiry and information for relevant providers. It can reduce repeated explanations, although lenders may still require their own applications and checks.

  6. Help asking the right questions

We help clarify what providers need and what to check before proceeding. You retain control of the decision and can take independent legal, financial or tax advice where needed.

For this product

Check the cash-flow fit, not just the monthly figure

Daily, weekly and monthly collections can have different effects on a business. We help you compare the schedule, total repayment, charges and any guarantee requirements. If money is tied up in customer invoices, we can also discuss whether invoice finance is a more relevant structure. Unsecured borrowing can still require personal guarantees.

Ocean Capital Exchange acts as a broker and introducer, not a lender. We do not make lending decisions or guarantee that a provider will make an offer. Introductions are limited to providers available through our panel; each provider sets its own eligibility, terms and credit decisions.

Due diligence

What lenders assess

Each lender applies its own criteria. Areas commonly reviewed include:

Trading history
How long the business has traded and its track record.
Cash flow
Bank statements showing capacity to repay.
Profitability
Accounts and management figures.
Credit history
Business and directors' credit records.
Existing debt
Other borrowing and repayment commitments.

Information often requested

  • Recent business bank statements
  • Filed accounts and management accounts
  • Details of existing borrowing
  • Directors' details for credit checks

Indicative only. Lenders set their own requirements. Ocean Capital Exchange does not make lending decisions.

Pricing structure

Costs and repayment

Pricing is quote-specific. Look for:

Interest
Charged on the outstanding balance, usually fixed.
Arrangement fee
Paid upfront or deducted from the loan.
Early repayment charges
If you settle before term.
Late payment charges
If instalments are missed.

Repayment and settlement

  • Fixed monthly instalments, usually by direct debit.
  • Repayments are due regardless of trading performance.
  • If the business defaults, guarantors may be called upon.
  • Early settlement may be possible, subject to charges.

Checklist for comparing quotes

  1. 1.Total amount repayable
  2. 2.Arrangement fee and whether it is deducted from funds
  3. 3.Early repayment terms
  4. 4.Guarantee scope and limits
  5. 5.Late payment charges

Estimate repayments on an unsecured loan

Use Quick estimate to compare monthly, weekly or daily payments across strong, moderate and challenged financial profiles, with illustrative nominal annual rates of 8%, 18% and 40%. All three use interest on the reducing balance, not factor rates or monthly flat rates, with no assumed upfront fees. Each profile shows estimated borrowing cost, total repayable and repayment amount for your entered term. Weekly estimates use 52 repayments per year. Daily payments run Monday to Friday and exclude weekends, using approximately 260 repayments per year. Bank holidays are not removed. Choose Compare my quote for a provider's actual figures, payment frequency and number of payments, using nominal, effective or flat annual rates. For flat pricing, the monthly equivalent of your annual flat input is shown clearly. Headline percentages on different pricing bases are not directly comparable. These are not APR comparisons or provider offers; finance is subject to provider approval.

Illustrative example only

Your actual quote may be entirely different after a lender or finance provider reviews your financial information and funding requirements. These figures are not a lending decision or an offer of finance.

Start with example assumptions; no lender quote is needed. These are illustrations, not offers or measured market averages. Your actual terms will depend on the provider and your business.

Your business figures

Weekly assumes 52 repayments a year, converting the term from months. Daily repayments are Monday to Friday only, excluding weekends. We estimate 260 payments a year and convert the term from months. Bank holidays are not removed.

Compare financial profiles

Three illustrative scenarios, not lender offers, a credit assessment or measured industry averages. Finance is subject to provider approval.

All three profiles use annual reducing-balance interest. Factor rates instead charge a fixed multiple of the original amount and are not used in this comparison. Monthly flat rates charge the original amount throughout the term and are not directly comparable by headline percentage.
