Spot FX: converting business currency at a rate agreed today
Ocean Capital Exchange helps you convert business currency for near-term payments and receipts, with a dedicated contact to discuss pricing, funding and settlement. A spot trade fixes the exchange rate when you accept the quote, rather than leaving the conversion open.
Definition
What spot FX is
Spot FX is a currency exchange agreed at the current market-based rate, with the two currencies exchanged on a near-term settlement date set by the provider for that currency pair.
The rate is fixed when you book, not when the money arrives. You are then committed to deliver the currency you are selling by the settlement time.
Spot suits needs that are immediate or already known in amount. It does not protect you against rate moves on payments due later; that is what forward contracts are for.
Your OCE account manager helps you compare the quoted all-in rate and funding requirements for your amount. Access to over 130 currencies is subject to provider capabilities; each pair and settlement route must be confirmed.

Suitability
When spot is a good fit
Spot works best when you need currency soon and know the amount.
Usually a fit
- Paying an invoice that is due now.
- Converting overseas receipts back to sterling as they arrive.
- Businesses with irregular currency needs.
- Topping up a currency balance for upcoming payments.
Usually not a fit
- Known future costs you want to budget at a fixed rate.
- Trying to time the market for profit.
- Amounts you cannot fund by the settlement date.
- Currency pairs the partner does not support.
Process
How a spot trade works
A typical sequence with a partner:
- 01
Request a quote
Choose the currency pair, amount and which side is fixed.
- 02
Book the trade
Accept the rate within the quote window; the trade is now binding.
- 03
Fund it
Send the sold currency to the partner by the settlement time.
- 04
Receive or pay
Bought currency is paid to a beneficiary or credited to a balance.
In practice
Typical uses
Everyday spot situations:
- Immediate supplier payment
- Converting sterling to pay an invoice today.
- Repatriating income
- Selling euro or dollar receipts for sterling.
- Balance top-ups
- Buying currency to hold for near-term payments.
- One-off purchases
- Paying for equipment or services bought abroad.
- Amount to convertSource currency: GBP
- £45,000.00
- Hypothetical rateEUR per £1
- 1.1700
- Euros bought£45,000 × 1.1700
- €52,650.00
All figures are hypothetical, chosen to show the arithmetic. They are not current, typical or offered rates or fees. A rate one cent lower, 1.1600, would deliver €52,200.00, showing how small moves change the result.

Due diligence
What partners assess
Spot trading requires a partner account. Common checks:
- Business identity
- Registration and beneficial ownership.
- Trading purpose
- Commercial reason for conversions.
- Volumes
- Expected size and frequency.
- Source of funds
- Origin of money being converted.
Information often requested
- Certificate of incorporation or equivalent registration *non-UK only
- Identification for directors and beneficial owners
- Proof of business address *non-UK only
- A description of expected payment volumes, currencies and counterparties
Each partner sets its own criteria, may ask for more information and can decline an application. We cannot confirm which partner, currencies or countries will be available to you until it has reviewed your business.
Pricing structure
Costs and settlement
There is no published spot price. Costs come from:
- Exchange margin
- The gap between your rate and mid-market at booking.
- Onward payment costs
- OCE does not typically charge individual transfer fees. Confirm any provider-specific or third-party charges when converted funds are sent onward.
- Close-out costs
- If a booked trade is not funded or is cancelled.
Settlement
- You must fund the sold currency by the agreed settlement time.
- Bought currency is released after funds clear.
- If funding fails, the partner may reverse the trade at the prevailing rate at your cost.
Checklist for comparing quotes
- 1.Exchange rate quoted at the exact same time
- 2.Fixed transfer fees and who pays them
- 3.Intermediary and receiving-bank charges
- 4.Settlement cutoff times and value dates
- 5.Which partner holds your funds and how they are safeguarded

Assumptions, and what this leaves out
- Direction: you sell the source currency and buy the destination currency.
- The full source amount is converted; no separate individual transfer fee is modelled.
- The rate you enter is assumed to already include any margin; no separate spread is added.
- Third-party or intermediary bank charges may apply in particular circumstances and are excluded from this illustration.
- Excluded: provider margin not reflected in your rate, intermediary or receiving-bank charges, card or platform fees, tax and any credit or margin calls.
Results are arithmetic on your inputs only. They are not a quote, an offer or advice, and no provider has priced them.

Spot FX questions
Still unsure? Call +44 20 7183 2026.
When is the rate fixed?
When you accept the quote. It does not change after booking.
How quickly does a spot trade settle?
The partner sets a standard settlement period for each currency pair. Confirm it when you book.
Can I cancel a spot trade?
Once booked it is binding. Cancelling usually means reversing at the current rate, which may cost you.
Is spot cheaper than a forward?
Not necessarily. A forward rate reflects interest rate differences between currencies and may require a deposit; it is a different tool rather than a more expensive one.
How do I know if a rate is competitive?
Compare it with the mid-market rate at the same moment and check what fees apply.
Do you offer live rates on this site?
No. Speak to your OCE account manager about a quote for your amount and currency pair. The executing provider confirms the rate and settlement terms when you deal; website examples are hypothetical.
